Waiting for the GRID

http://bit.ly/7XwAG

I have always been an unabashed fan of CERN, not for its obvious benefits to particle and nuclear physics, biotechnology and nanotechnology but for its power of GRID computing that is going to revolutionise the communication system of the world in a couple of years. True it might turn you into a semidigital robotic homosapien with RFID chips embeded within your body to substitute the cell phone or your electric blanket or even your airconditioner in the distant future , but the amount of affordable comfort and power it will deliver to the humans in process is truly unbelievable, and spurs me on.

When CERN's new particle accelerator, the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) hits the red letter day this summer it will possibly produce 15 petabytes or 15 million gigabytes a year or nearly 1% of all the digital information produced annually on the planet single handed. The Grid to be created by the CERN scientists who were the creators of the world wide web and will enable us to store and process such huge amounts of data on a global scale, using dedicated optical fibre cables and the wireless. It should help us enable data transfer at rates in excess of one gigabyte/second thus heping us download a 100 MB video in seconds and pushing us into a virtual world as never before.
