Prominent Scientist Activist Sunita Narain , the Director of CSE in India and an environmentalist who took up the two big Cola giants single handed in Asia on the famous pesticides content case , termed the Copenhagen Climate Change Conference as a dialog of the deaf. In a expose of the machinations of the proposed Danish Climate Deal , Ms Narain termed it as a poor deal for climate change. She exposes the coming together of a new group of big emitters ( obviously the spokespersons for the coal and oil lobby ) the Umbrella group comprising of Australia, U.S. Canada, Japan, and at times Russia, wanting to bury the Kyoto pact at Copenhagen to evade action on failure to adhere to Carbon mitigation promises as per the Kyoto pact.
“The rich want to scrap the Kyoto protocol which gives them legally binding targets and forces compliance. They propose a completely new framework called the Copenhagen Accord. It will not be a political agreement but a vision statement by the hosts Denmark, supported by the G7 and a few other big emitters.” says Ms Narain.
But what a myopic vision. A vision that lets defaulters of Kyoto get away free . A vision that puts all 192 nations on the same platform irrespective of their emission records and contribution to the earths warming. A vision that tells the poor nations........we shall perhaps distribute ten billion dollars if you permit us to escape from our previous commitments at Kyoto and subsequent defaults of the targets laid down in the treaty." In short a cheap deal offered to the poor nations..... Dollar ten billion to let the rich free on Kyoto and accept the Copenhagen accord........any takers !!
This myopic vision of the Danish hosts has got the big money support....support from the oil and coal industry lobby which sponsors the thousands of conferences, platforms, meetings and seminers on climate change around thye world. The Coal and Oil lobbies of the world whose think tanks devised this vision statement and which persuaded the Aussie Kevin Rudd Government to initially propose the same a few months ago http://bit.ly/XUrUd . It is this lobby that is using all its political clout and money muscle to win over dissenters globally to bury Kyoto as it is hurting the global image and consumption of Coal and oil. China and India the biggest critics of the Danish vision statement were swung around in a mega deal which saw Hu Govt announce a surprising 40% cut in emission intensity and Indian environment minister Jairam Ramesh turn canary for the Copenhagen accord.
The smaller nations are still planning a revolt but with billions of Dollars of sponsorships flowing down Copenhagen’s negotiating tables, it is quite likely that they will be won over. However the biggest loser in this deal will be the European countries of Spain , Portugal, Germany etc. , the countries who really worked hard and made giant breakthroughs into renewable energy programmes at their own cost.
The Renewable energy companies who are making a comeback in popularity and desperately trying to be cost competitive will also be hurt in absensece of Kyoto.
Besides the poorer nations who don’t hold the negotiation clout of China, India and are certain to be left out of the deal making process at the last minute, including the nations on the brink and nations that could sink from the effects of climate change.
