OK,you are getting ready to pack your bags again. After 5 fruitless meetings from March to August at Bonn and the October meets at Tianjin China where you all pushed the paper files back and forward, you are once again getting ready for the Climate Change mega event at Cancun?
What for? Oh! it's the COP16 annual jamboree at Mexico. The climate change monologues of not the deaf, but rather the daft. Why do I call it so ? Perhaps because it lacks a clarity and honesty of purpose. Well any uninitiated "Baboso" would also tell you the same at Cancun too because of the obsolete agenda of discussion at COP 16 that makes little sense today after the Copenhagen fiasco. Ask yourself and other participants of COP 16. Are you really contributing to the cause of stopping climate change. Have not 16 years of unsatisfactory progress been able to open our eyes. Should not the agenda of COP16 be changed and a positive action plan be drawn out for clean energy ?
There are several reasons why Cancun conference is meaningless without change of format and the goals of the climate change conference.
1) The COP15 conference was the beginning of a change of thought process. For 15 years the COP conferences with its present agenda had yielded no measurable positive results. Bull Shitting 15 years On Climate Change
Emissions of countries who signed the Kyoto protocol had not reduced, but increased steadily despite each nation spending considerable amount to time and money in mitigation efforts. That could be a pointer to only one conclusion. That the direction taken was wrong.
Unless the direct financing of clean energy projects was agreed to as the prime objective of climate change discussions, no achievable milestones can be meaningfully set, and emissions will never be reduced.
2) European nations are still reluctant to drop Carbon Trading. As market prices dropped and
Carbon as a commodity hit rock bottom prices, the climate change exchange sold out to the ICE commodity exchange at London increasing the chances of price manipulation of energy and carbon prices all the more, primarily due to round trip trading called the "London loophole" The carbon prices have risen ever since and the effort to revive carbon trading in Europe continues unabated, sidelining the direct financing of clean energy.
3) Some sort of financing commitment however inadequate was made at the COP15 conference by the rich nations. The same should be directly channelized to clean energy development instead using indirect mitigation methods of payments against carbon credits. The discussion at the Cancun conference should focus on funding of clean energy projects globally, not on political posturing on who is to blame. Once such a global fund is created, each country will start putting in their contributions to the fund to ensure that they have a stake in global energy transformation process.
