Pakistan is in a turmoil. Not that it is a recent phenomenon. Over the last few years it has lost thousands of people in bomb blasts and suicide terrorist attacks and property worth billions have been damaged. The leaders of the country who tried to bring back some sanity like Ms Bhutto and others have been assassinated. The military establishment which essentially controls Pakistan had been two timing the militant groups and the US. It was sheltering the militants and even training them and helping them expand and grow. On the other side it was a front line ally of the US war on jehad and global terrorism .
Two timing the US and the Al Qaeda brought double bonanza to Pakistan while it lasted . On one side it gained the most favored nation status with the Gulf nations besides awe admiration and Petro-dollars for doing the work others did not dare do. It was the only nation that could keep and train the soldiers of jehad in the name of the holy war of Kashmir and grow its nuclear arsenal without global censure . At the same time it got the latest arms and ammunition from the US including the F 16 besides a $20 billion yearly grant, most of which found its way to train the jehadis.
Pak’s two timing game is up with Osama caught and shot in the Abbotabad bedroom and a livid and jilted Obama raging in unspent fury.. Now squeezed between fundamentalists and its western allies turned foes, Pakistan seems to be caught between the devil and the deep sea. Pakistan wants to regain control over its sovereign territory ,that it first lost to the militant groups, and now to the invading American navy seals trying to flush out the terrorists. . This because it fears that it may loose its prized nuclear assets if the US grows more confident, bold and aggressive.
The military is still the most powerful voice in Pakistan despite the embarrassment of being caught unaware in the US attack. It has also been unable to stop the barrage of US drones attacking terrorist targets at will after the Abbotabad showdown. Soon after the Abbotabad raid the Pakistan military trying to regain face and composure warned US and other countries to desist from further attacks within its territory. All it did was to provoke the US military leadership which immediately retaliated with drone attacks killing 12 terrorists in a training camp. This and further attacks on the terrorists within Pakistan has set the military leadership thinking. How can Pakistan keep its prized nuclear assets under its control, so that it can always leverage its position in case of any confrontation with the US or neighboring India?
One line of thought is to bring in friendly China who has been already supplying technology for its nuclear programme besides helping them to reprocess fuel. China with its state of art defense surveillance device and airspace intrusion detection capability is the only nation both skilled and capable to meet the US might in advanced avionics and weaponry. While it may not be willing to commit itself in Pakistan's war , it could be keen to protect the nuclear installations where it supplies fuel and outdated technology from China's aging first generation plants, some of whom are on the verge of being phased out. In short the attack on Abbotabad could actually help the Chinese secure access to its first overseas nuclear installation.
