There Is Tension In Air, As Govt Plays Footsie on Corruption Bill

http://bit.ly/7XwAG

I once again visited Ramlila Maidan yesterday ( without the Anna cap ).. more as journalist than an activist. It was nearly  four days after my last visit when I had noticed Anna's failing and written a " in your face" piece for the Economic Times on the 23rd of August WHAT HAPPENS IF ANNA DIES ? Though the pace of political discussion has accelerated since the 23rd, there is no solution still in sight as the Government which was not playing ball before has now started playing footsie.

The people are extremely restless from New Delhi to Bangalore and more and more people are talking of the Bhagat Singh, Udham Singh  route to free India from corruption. That is dangerous as it means pockets of violence like in Maoist belts, Jammu and Kashmir and the north east could spread over the entire nation with people taking to arms in the revolutionary flavor. Volunteers yesterday were busy putting down such patent inflammatory sloganeering including against the ruling party and the Gandhi family at the Ramlila ground. The strange part was that they were not put up by political opponents of the Congress but by disgruntled people who have been affected by corruption and have flocked to Ramlila grounds to make common cause with the Lokpal anti corruption movement.

Unfortunately the desperation mounted amongst the people as Congress wanted discussions but no voting on resolutions desired by Team Anna to end the fast, and the doctor's health report was pretty worrying. Sonia's son Rahul Gandhi heading the congress party in her absence yesterday threw in what he called a game changer, the idea of having a Constitutional Body like the Election Commission  for checking corruption. His talk showed political immaturity and lack of  seriousness especially in view of the fact that the Lokpal Bill (which does not need a constitutional amendment and 2/3 majority but a simple majority which UPA has  ) has not been passed in  the last 42 years. Besides a Constitutional body on graft trespasses on the  Federal structure of India where states enjoy their own laws that can  never be agreed on.

The lack of political maturity in focusing on the immediate deliverable while handling the current crisis increases the risk to Anna's life who has today entered the 12th day of the fast. Will politicians have the maturity and sense to close the deal today before it is too late. The Gandhi family and the Congress has a lot to loose in case Anna's health takes a sudden down turn . History shows that they have suffered the most due to political anger as both Indira and Rajiv were assassinated due to executive actions of the Indian state under their command by local activist terrorists .
