March 3 Gujarat India
Last Friday when Gujarat state government decided to reduce the value added tax (VAT) on the sales of battery operated two wheelers, nobody knew that it will yield an excellent result, benefitting a lot of people. The already gloomy market of these electric bikes has got a boost in sales now with this latest concession in tax. The long awaited bill for reduction in the VAT levied on the electric two-wheelers in Gujarat was finally slashed along with the additional taxes, which brought down the whole tax 5 to 15 percent in the annual budget presented in the Gujrat Assembly on February 24, 2012.

March 2 Milwaukee US
The food truck Fast Foodie plans to use electric bikes this summer for greater reach.
Fast Foodie will use the bikes to sell its globacos — tacos with global flavors — and seasoned potato chips ("Ethiopian Love Dust" is one of the spice blends).
Owner Jackie Valent said using the green bikes “will allow us to not only grow by 400% but also serve places we currently cannot due to the size of our current food truck.”
Fast Foodie plans to send four of the bikes downtown, to the east side and on the south side for breakfast, lunch and dinner (the area is dictated by the bikes’ battery capacity). They also will be at farmers markets in those areas.
March 1st Beijing China
Beijing’s plan to flood the nation’s roads with electric cars has hit a bump: consumers don’t want them. But e-bikes – already a success story – could trigger a transport revolution, argues David Tyfield.
One of the most significant single developments for the global environment is the recent transformation of urban mobility in contemporary China. The number of cars in China, already the world’s largest auto market after the collapse of demand in the United States two years ago, increased from 9.2 million in 2004 to 40.3 million in 2010 and the total number of vehicles from 27.4 million to 90.9 million respectively.
Growth is expected to continue at 7% to 8% annually in the medium term, helping to sustain China as the global leader for absolute national greenhouse-gas emissions as well as catapult it towards a dauntingly high per capita carbon footprint.
Feb 29 New Delhi India
New Delhi: Responding to a long-pending demand by makers of electric vehicles (EVs) and, perhaps to burnish its green credentials, the government may announce a tax incentive for buyers of such vehicles in this year’s budget.
The move will likely benefit the makers of electric scooters such as Electrotherm (India) Ltd that makes YObykes, the Munjal family-owned Hero Electric, and the country’s only manufacturer of electric cars, Mahindra Reva Electric Vehicles Pvt. Ltd. Around 110,000 EVs were sold in the country in 2010-11, according to the Society of Manufacturers of Electric Vehicles (SMEV) lobby group.
The department of heavy industry and the working group of the auto sector have proposed an income-tax (I-T) incentive for buyers of EVs in their budget recommendations, specifying that this depends on the kind of vehicle being bought. (Typically, such so-called graded relief is a function of the amount spent by the individual with the incentive, or tax write-off in this case, being higher for vehicles that cost more.)

Feb 28 New Delhi India
Toyota Prius, the world’s best-known and highest-selling hybrid car, sold over two million units worldwide in the last 15 years but only 150 vehicles in India last fiscal. So far this financial year, not a single Prius has been driven out of a Toyota showroom in the country.
The Prius experience is illustrative of the dismal state of affairs in the electric vehicle arena in India, which has sales of a paltry 83,000 vehicles compared to over 4 million cars and scooters sold in the country. That may change. The government is expected to roll out a policy for hybrid and electric vehicles (xEV) this April after over a year of consultations. Yet, while all indicators for India’s auto future point roughly in the ‘electric’ direction, India’s blueprint for success may require adopting a balanced three-pronged strategy: create infrastructure; provide crucial subsidies; fund essential research and development (R&D) programmes
