The # Copenhagen Emissions Cookie is finally crumbling. The original Aussie accord now taken up by the hosts Denmark and backed by the G7 is actually a draft of the Oil & Coal lobby and had three major Objectives.
a) Trash Kyoto pact
b) Draw out a Global emissions pact but with no definate benchmarks with dates.
c) Draw in all countries to sign the emissions draft
The objective as stated before was to give Australia, U.S. and Canada along with several other industrialised nations the right to continue business as usual and stop getting caught for violating Kyoto. With 42% rise in carbon emissions between
1990 to 2007 Australia had the unique distinction of being the second in the per capita consumption of Carbon only behind United States. The reason for Australia & U.S. playing canary to the Oil & Coal lobby is not unexpected as they have the major use as well as resources of these commodities and have powerful lobbies influencing policy decisions in these nations http://bit.ly/XUrUd
As reported below in this blog, the oil lobby had expected major nations like China and India to oppose the move and hence used considerable money and muscle to get these powerful nations to switch tunes and sing canary for their pet project, " bury kyoto & create a new emission deal". But though the Indian minister Ramesh turned canary for the oil lobby and misrepresented his countries case in their own parliament, and even China agreed for a new creation called emission intensity cut, the African countries stole the show with two boycotts, the first at Barcelona , a fortnight ago and the second at Copenhagen during the first week of the meet.
That turned the tables, and with IEC estimating a $ 10 trillion climate change bill as per the new Danish accord , the rifts in the G7 appeared. Already countries like Germany and France who had made genuine attempts to cut emissions by voluntarily switching to non-fossil fuel sources, were feeling cheated by Australia & the U.S.Now with public opinion worldwide including Britain mounting against a bogus emissions deal the pandora's box was open .Connie Hedegaard resigned 48 hours before the end of summit with rumors that she had been bypassed by the Danish PM in important decision making process of G7 strategy.
The previous offer of the EU to offer a $ 10 billion package for climate change mitigation had already been spurned a few days ago . The US administration attempted to sweeten a deal for developing countries with the promise of a $350m (£215m) fund for clean energy technologies, such as wind and solar power, which was rightly ignored as pittance.Even Al Gore is rumored to have left the summit as its apparent failure was written on the wall before the leaders arrived.
The Gaurdian UK was the first major media house of the G7 raising the bugle " Don't Kill Kyoto " With 48 hours to the summit and mounting public opinion against G7 other major newspapers are likely to cause opinion shift in G7. A no deal is anyway a better than a bad deal and world leaders have still time to cancel their Copenhagen jamboree.
It is shameful what has happened.
ReplyDeleteWell such things have been happening all along. The cloak and dagger game does not happen only at the EU. Even in India, the Environment Minister Ramesh is a singing canary for the oil lobby, despite the negotiators playing fair. Had it not been for strong and alert China, the EU would have its way.
