I am at the end of a fascinating holiday, visiting my father at my sister's home in Cochin . He has been living here for the last ten years because of the temperate climate throughout the year at the sea side unlike in Delhi where I live, with all its smog and traffic snarls and metro city disadvantages besides extreme temperature swings from 44 deg max to2 deg min. The picturesque Yacht Club Enclave house of exposed brickwork with tiled roofs overlooks a serene waterfront, laced with droopy coconut trees.
From morning to night small fishing boats ply the straits along with the luxury yachts and powerful dredgers that work tirelessly to keep the backwaters clean that lead onto the ocean front . The Cochin port and the newly inaugurated Vallarpadam container transshipment terminals that handles hundreds of large ships is often fed through a large number of smaller vessels that move through such inland waterway and backwater channels. But it is the birds and bees in the sleepy waters that are more endearing, the black and blue white breasted Koel duo that has a nest up a young coconut tree and sing their heart out every morning and evening.
